About Naomi Tiry Salgado

I enjoy painting en plein air (outside, on location) because of the spontaneity and freshness it adds to my work. There is something about hearing, smelling, and feeling the atmosphere of a scene that I hope comes through on the canvas.  It also allows me to meet some really awesome people who stop by to see what I'm doing.

I have lived on the "West Coast" of Wisconsin all of my life.  I recently hopped the border and now live in Eastern MN.  I paint outdoors all year round.  You'll find me out in all kinds of weather, though I have my limits.  I have learned the hard way to not go out in wind--it topples my easel and breaks equipment.  I'm also a bit of a wimp when it gets below 20 F. I have a hard time keeping my toes and fingers warm, even with  instant heat pouches tucked inside my socks and gloves!

I frequently paint with palette knives instead of brushes because of the beautiful textures that magically happen on the canvas.  This technique gives my work a more loose, carefree and unpretentious style yet I'm still able to maintain strong lines and structural details.

My work is inspired by the Impressionist movement, especially their use of bold, broken color.  I use a palette of 8 colors similar to what the Impressionist painters used: a warm and cool version of each of the three primary colors, plus white and Payne's gray.

I was a K-8th grade art teacher at Trinity Academy in Hudson, WI for 5 years. Though I love working with children, I found it a struggle to balance time with my family and time for my own artwork. I gave up teaching to start painting professionally in September 2015.

I am the President of Outdoor Painters of Minnesota.  It's a great group that promotes plein air painting in the region.  We put on exhibitions and events for education of the public on plein air painting and personal growth of ourselves as artists. Being a painter can be very solitary.  It's wonderful to have fellow painters with which to "talk shop".

The two most important areas of my life are my Family and my Faith. My whole family encourages and supports my artistic endeavors. My husband helps me think through the business side of things. My son helps with technology “stuff”. My daughter considers herself my “business manager.”  My little rascal dachshund likes being my studio helper...but has the nasty habit of eating oil paint if I accidentally leave it within reach.
